Open Monumentendag in Amsterdam

Heritage Days or Open Monumentendag as they call it in Dutch is an event that takes place in Amsterdam every year on one of September's weekends. This is when a lot of inaccessible on the daily basis places open their door to the public for sightseeing. Most places are open both on Saturday and Sunday so there is enough time to visit all the interesting sites. This year I went to Zaanse Schans on Saturday so I could only go on Sunday. However, I was also invited for a walk to the heaths that day. Trying to find a moment anyway, I went to the city early in the morning in order to see the most interesting place from all available this year. This way I was one of the very first people that day to visit the Koninklijke Industrieel Groote Club. It's the headquarters of the entrepreneurs' association. The idea of that place reminds me so much of all those gentlemen's clubs in London - if you watched the TV series Sherlock you probably remember that Mycroft belongs to such an organization. The club in Amsterdam is located on the main square of the city which I passed many times. I would never thought though that such a - you know - posh organization can be located in such an invisible spot. The outside looks really simple but the interior is much more stylish.

As I mentioned before my host family invited me that Sunday on a trip to the moors. We went to Schoorl which is a town located about 50 km to the north from Amsterdam. There is something like a nature sanctuary there with dunes, heather and fresh air from the North Sea. I enjoyed that whole heather situation so much that I bought one in a flowerpot a few days ago. If you're also interested, just google Schoorl duinen and by the way, duin means a dune in Dutch.

Zaanse Schans

Undeniably I had loads of fun during my six weeks in Amsterdam because they passed so quickly. I'm back in Krakow again to continue my studies. To cheer myself up, I'd like to look back on my holidays and tell you a bit more about things I did. I'll start with my bike trip to Zaanse Schans. I was there over a year ago with my host family. However, we visited it quite late in the afternoon so it was already quite dark outside. Daylight is quite useful there as Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum of windmills by the river Zaan. They were once very popular but over the time they were replaced by steam engines and became a stereotypical symbol and tourist attraction of the Netherlands. You can also see some traditional buildings there which are mainly shops for tourists. I highly recommend going to a house with clogs workshop in which you'll be presented how they are produced. There is also the Museum of Albert Heijn which went from one small shop to a domination of the grocery market in the whole country.

You can easily reach Zaanse Schans by 391 bus from Amsterdam central station but you will miss a chance to see many beautiful views. If you decide to go on a bike, it's about 20 km one way from the city centre. You'll go through an area called Laag Holland - Lowland Holland. It's a landscape full of pretty-looking polders and meadows which will definitely reward you with the effort of biking.

On the same day there was a barrel organ festival taking place in Amsterdam which I couldn't miss. It seems to me that the barrel organ are quite popular in this part of Europe: Haarlem has a whole museum dedicated to them, there is one playing in Dam/Kalverstraat every day and every year in mid-September Amsterdam hosts an entire festival about them (if you are interested just google: Draaiorgel Festival)!

Sail Amsterdam 2015

Almost two weeks ago Amsterdam hosted for four days a pretty special event on its inner waters. I am talking here about the SAIL Amsterdam, which is a sea-themed event held every five years. The tall ships from around the world sail down the IJ river into the city, stay in the harbour for four days and are open to the public. Poland was kindly represented by Dar Mlodziezy, but there were also some ships from much more remote places, such as Ecuador, Sierra Leone or even Australia.

The very first SAIL Amsterdam was organized in 1975 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam and since then is repeated every five years. Apart from the enormous ships staying in the harbour, SAIL is also about tons and tons of smaller boats floating throughout the city. That's why the river looks like a street during rush hour at that time. The event attracted real crowds, without a shadow of a doubt I've never seen so many people in Amsterdam before. However, it was a big pleasure to walk down the twelve-kilometres-long route along the harbour while admiring those monumental floating creations.

Photos from Amsterdam

A niedługo mam nadzieję zasypać was nową porcją, więc już teraz zapraszam :)

Today I just want to make a quick announcement. On Saturday, that's in two days, I'm going for 6 weeks to Amsterdam! My dream of revisiting this place comes true. In March my lovely host family invited me to come again. I couldn't reject such an offer, I was too overjoyed. So I was trying to pass all my uni exams in June, otherwise I'd have to spend September in Krakow, retaking my exams. However, everything went smoothly and I'm going to have a great time in the Netherlands soon almost until the beginning of my academic year. I really can't wait for the upcoming weeks, I've planned so many cool things and I'll keep writing about them here :) So that would be it for today and in the meantime I'm going to leave you with five photos of Amsterdam which are some of my favourites. Although I have much more favourite photos because the city is so photogenic that most of the photos are just naturally beautiful. And just in a moment I hope to show you much more of Amsterdam so please stay tuned :)

Amsterdam Jordaan

Nasza wędrówka po Amsterdamie dobiega dzisiaj końca. Pozostała mi do pokazania wam ostatnia porcja zdjęć. Gdybym miała wybrać moje ulubione miejsce w całym Amsterdamie, to bez wahania wybrałabym właśnie to.

Our journey across Amsterdam comes to an end today. I've got a very last part of photos to share with you. This time we are going to see the area called Jordaan. If I had to choose my favorite place in the whole city, I would do for Jordaan with no hesitation. In the past it was a poor, working-class district, now it's pretty posh. It's known for its artistic atmosphere with lots of nice cafes and markets. It's also an area where the skyline is dominated by the Westerkerk's tower (e.g. in the second or third picture). By the way, Westerkerk is a church in which the one and only Rembrandt was buried. Yeah, Jordaan has an amazing vibe. It's even more beautiful with all those flowers and other green stuff trailing over the walls. So if you haven't been to this part of Amsterdam, I hope that these photos will encourage you to do so. And if you were, make sure to share with me whether you were as charmed with Jordaan as I am.
